Resources for Apostles and Cross-cultural Workers

Learning Resources

Learning Resources are arranged by topic, with links to expanded resource lists in other places, but not in order of importance!  I regret that these resources include very few audio or video tools.  At this time, I have not found many outstanding non-print media resources worth including.  Please submit items for consideration.  Maybe we could create audio mini-booklets of these print products?

"Representing a walk with God requires sensitivity to discern between the things in my life that are cultural, and the things that are truthful. There is a difference between what I think is truth and what is truth. Maturity is learning to tell the difference between general truth for everyone and specific truth for me. See also "The God's Story" from http://www.gods-story.org, the best chronological story of the Bible available, and a fantastic way to show the overall flow of history so that an audience is ready for a personal introduction to Jesus."

1.  Abu Sharif by J K Mellis
"A Moroccan Berber village experiences God through visions and dreams. Decisions about truth versus tradition must happen. God reveals Himslef in their worldview as they seek Him.

2.  And the Word Came With Power: How God Met & Changed a People Forever by Joanne Shetler
"A single woman lives among a village people fearful of demons and spirits.  God spoke through her and they created new and bright futures for themselves.  Goes well with "In Search of the Source," "Abu Sharif," and "Baghdad Believer.""

3.  In Search of the Source: A First Encounter with God's Word
"What happens when a westerner attempts to learn traditions and values of a simple village tribe?  He confronts his own ignorance! Read it with "And the Word Came with Power,"  "Abu Sharif," and "Baghdad Believer.""

4.  Baghdad Believer by J Nealson
"What happens when God introduces himself to "normal Baghdad people" who do not follow the power-seeking religious figures? Lives are changed and that puts them at odds with those using religion to force conformity. Read this along with "In Search of the Source,"  "and The Word Came with Power," and "Abu Sharif."

5.  The New Tolerance: How a Cultural Movement Threatens to Destroy You, Your Faith, and Your Children by Josh D. McDowell
"The modern "tolerance"  means that we must become "intolerant" of anyone holding to any beliefs of right and wrong. We are not created to live "nicely" and "autonomously."
We are created beings with a purpose, not accidental sperm-scum!  Life is not about tolerance;  it is about God and serving a high and noble purpose."

6.  Megashift: Igniting Spiritual Power by James Rutz
""The Church is now more networked than autonomous, more southern hemispheric than northern, more poor than middle class." "We are not engaged in a quest for the perfect church. The early church is our prototype, not our goal or ideal."

7.  City of God, City of Satan by Robert C. Linthicum
""We carry with us the baggage of a theology designed in rural Europe.  Even the very way we formulate theological thought have been forged from our rural past. What we are in need of is a theology as urban as our sociology and missiology".   Study the city and move in tune with it--in the power of God."

8.  Foolishness to the Greeks: The Gospel and Western Culture by Leslie Newbigin
"Mr. Newbigin helps us to discern between culture and truth, opinion and fact, absolute and negotiable.  Much of what is labeled "Christianity" is actually western culture."

9. The Gospel in a Pluralist Society by Leslie Newbigin
Another outstanding analysis of how the Good News from Jesus Christ is embedded in a culture without syncretism or dilution.

10. Simply the Story.doc  by Dorothy Miller
How to tell a Bible story to train someone to teach themselves, especially those who are non-literate learners. (This link is a .doc download).
